Tommy Castro plays a very hot electric guitar and sings with a strong voice. His band consists of drums, sax, and guitar which includes some interesting interplay between Keith Crossan on sax and Tommy on guitar. This is an album that mixes funky R&B tunes with steady rocking numbers all with slashing guitar solos to make a very impressive and enjoyable album.
The main course is blues rock numbers including the rousing Cant Keep a Good Man Down, Suitcase Full of Blues, You Knew the Job was Dangerous, and Take the Highway Down - which would stand up very well on a AOR radio play list. These songs all play on the format of fat rhythm guitar and sax combination with a slashing guitar solo and gritty vocals on a steady rocking blues.
Another side of the album are the R&B tunes like You Gotta Do What You Gotta Do with its down and dirty sax and I Want to Show You with a strong backing chorus. But these songs still bear the trademark searing guitar work. A little bit of funk is included with High on the Hog with a nice R&B sax solo. Unlike many players Tommy never lets the R&B format keep him away from his guitar and it sounds great.
Check out this album for shortening a long highway drive - once you hear it you'll forget the drive.
