Cool Shooz Borders April 98 The jazz band Cool Shooz played the local borders. Led by pianist -Martin Eagle, the band played songs from indy release ' Strut. The band includes Larry Duckworth on drums, Jeff Moe on bass and vocal, Danny Gotham on guitar, and Jeff Brown on sax. Highlights were the delicate "The Optimist" and the rousing "Strut".
Cool Shooz plays a cool jazz a little adventure into vocals, a little blues, and a nice mix of tempos and instruments. And these guys can play - without any star roles. You can listen to music without difficulty or boredom - a fine line to travel in jazz. Jazz can range from wild bands that require heavy concentration to listen to or bands that form just a backdrop to conversation or dance. This band is closer to the latter approach - very easy to listen to - but not too slick or lite.
I picked up there indy release "Strut" which captures the band just fine - check it out. They band swings on the record. The electric piano moves the songs along over the rhythm section while the guitar slithers and stings on top. The tenor sax adds meat and the soprano makes it sweet. "Cool."
I liked this band and music. Another great surprise from borders. It's nice to be able to stop in and be surprised by someone you haven't heard before.
