I walked into a Borders (a book/CD/cafe chain) the other night while they happened to have a band playing and - surprise - they were great. The band, Grey Eye Glances, was on a 33 Borders store and they were tight, professional, and interesting.

Their music is a light, mostly acoustic, sound (electric bass, acoustic guitars, & electric piano) with vocal harmonies that supports a strong set of songs and a very silky smooth lead vocalist. The band was tight, not too showy, and with interesting song structures that caught the ear. The depth and maturity of the songwriting I found unusual in a book chain cafe. And the band knows that they have a potential star in their lead vocalist, Jennifer Noble.

The band was backed by an acoustic guitarist and fronted by the three main members of the band. Eric O'Dell sang harmony and played a bass that because of the small setting often led the music. Dwayne Keith played piano and harmonies as well as writing half the songs. Jennifer Nobel sang lead, played some guitar, and wrote the other half of the songs. This was a "band sound" but her vocals are special enough to stand out. She will do well on radio.

The songs were good - not bland, not overtly sad, not obnoxiously cheery. The two songs that stuck with me where "Snow" and "Chills." They had distinctive changes that caught the ear while leaving a strong impression - an impression of mood. Better to let the lyrics explain it from Dwayne Keith's Snow.

     If it starts to snow
Well then it starts to snow
     If we feel it go
Well we should let it go
     I know this little place
     That's big enough to hide
And if you stay real close
     We both can fit inside
     And if we lose control
     Well then we lose control

Borders is not a great place to hear music, the cafe is full of people and waiters and the room is open to the bookstore. It must be very distracting to play there. Which made the show even more remarkable. The band has 2 small label CDs and a new large label CD that just came out. I expect to hear them again.
