Robert's Review of John Wesley Harding * at Borders, 3/98

John Wesley Harding played the local Borders to a small but appreciative crowd. Playing solo in a small room is probably the best setting for a folk singer. He played about an hour leading off with a rousing version of "Window Seat" from his new album. Although he is noted as a great guitarist I preferred the live solo version over the album version with a band. The other instruments often sound repetitive and don't add enough to the song. His solo stripped down versions come out more dynamic. Which is a shame for "Window Seat" which could have been a great radio song with a better recording. Harding also played "Its all my fault", "Sweat tears blood & come", "You so & so", "Devil in me", and ended with "I'm staying here (and I'm not buying a gun)." These songs range from serious to humor and are focused on people and relationships. He writes insightful stories and sings in a clear voice and offers humorous stories in his stage patter. Go & see him.
