Jimmy Thackery and the Drivers played their brand of hard driving blues at the Artscenter in Carrboro, NC on Friday Night. He showed what a little showmanship and a whole lot of blues guitar can do to make your night.
This is a three piece band that showcases Thackery guitar playing. Thackery (formerly of the Nighthawks) sang a few songs but about half of the vocals were left to the drummer Mark Stutso who also played very well both driving the songs forward with heavy rolls and using light steady brush work during the quieter guitar solos. The bass player (whose name I missed) was steady and provided consistent rhythmn to the music. Thackery also played front man entertaining the crowd by playing the guitar with his teeth and behind his back and sometimes just stepping forward without regards to the microphone to belt out his blues.
The band played a number of the songs that they have recorded including Wild Night Out as well as a great version of Red House. But most of the night belonged to the instrumentals and the instrumental breaks in the songs. Thackery is not afraid to stand upfront and just play. The only down side to the evening was the 2nd encore where Thackery came out alone to play the Star Spangled Banner at a volume that drove the audience to cover their ears.
The Artscenter is a good place for music - not too big and with pretty good sound. It wasn't sold out but it was full. They had removed the tables from the main floor and their was some dancing but not a lot. Some of the crowd just stood up close to watch Thackery play.
Definitely a Wild Night Out. Check Thackery out when you get a chance.
