Robert's Review of Junior Wells at Bull Durham Blues Festival, 09/14/96

Junior Wells finished up the 9th annual Bull Durham Blues Festival, playing late on Saturday night at the old Durham Blues Ball Park. His band came out first led by a killer 4 piece horn section and they played funky blues tight and soulful. Junior came out with his harp and jumped it another level. His voice cracked with age and a strange popping technique but age is not a problem for a blues voice and it worked. He played "Mojo working" and other classics as well as some less known tunes.

The Bull Durham Blues Festival is held ever year at the old Durham Blues minor league ball park - the same one in the movie Bull Durham. Durham is a center of the old Piedmont blues scene but is now best known as the city of medicine and Junior was the cure for whatever ailed you. The crowd was mixed of local residents and transient students from Duke and North Carolina but they all jumped and danced to the music. A great time was had by all. It was just a shame that they started late and curfew kicked in.

I am researching Lucius P. Weaver who in 1958 +/- wrote a song titled 
"Two Head Woman" which Junior Wells recorded on the Chief Label at 
that time.  I am seeking information on this person and possibly other 
songs he wrote for Junior Wells and Magic Sam or others. Thank you.

Junior was truly one of the greatest bluesmen of all time, check out 
the Delmark release "On Tap" one of his more overlooked albums; a true 
treasure to hear.

Junior Wells will never be forgotten. He was a wonderful
harp player and, so darn cute! I will just keep playing his

Help! Heard "she Wants to Sell My Monkey" on direct tv and I must have 
it--what cd is it on?  It was Junior Wells and another voice.

Martin sorry, I'm not familiar with that one. However, Music Boulevard 
lists song titles for his available CDs if you want to hunt and peck - 
"www.rasman.com\reviews\musicbl.html". He also does a lot of albums 
with Buddy Guy. Good Luck, I know it's frustrating not being able to 
get a song that you want.

since 1970, and I have about 10 vinyls of him with many other fist class

I had the pleasure of meeting Junior Wells in London, when he played the 
Jazz Cafe, Camden. I am nineteen, and have been listening to his music 
since I've been fourteen. He was a harmonica hero to me, he played 
differently, but was in the same league as all the greats.  This would be 
the first and last time I would see him live. He wasn't at his best, by a
ny means but I am  glad that I got to talk to him and see him perform 
before his death. His harp playing should be remmembered up there with the 
Sonny Boy Williamsons, Walter Horton, Little Walter and James Cotton. what 
he played was simple, but soulful and masterful but above all individual 
and full of energy.
