The Bull Durham Blues Festival held its 10th Annual show for two nights at the old Durham Blues ball field. Attendance reached record levels during near perfect weather. Saturday night's crowd was not disappointed with great performances by Keb' Mo', Koko Taylor and Blues Machine, and Bo Diddley with the Debby Hastings Band.
Keb' Mo' is a young singer songwriter who plays blues on acoustic guitars, national steel, and harmonica. He has a strong deep resonant voice that works well with his songs. At times he seems to be a mix of old line blues singer and a 70's singer songwriter - he even had Jackson Browne sing on his last album. But his blues ring true - sometimes gentle, sometimes teasing but always true. Since the last time I saw him he seems to be more relaxed on stage, not fidgeting as much. He talked comfortably to the audience about the songs and blues and got the audience to join in on a rousing version of Hand it Over.
Among the songs he played were Perpetual Blues Machine, That's not love, and You can love yourself from his Just Like You album. He also played a dramatic version of Dangerous Mood with a slide on his national steel guitar. Keb' Mo' then ended his show with More Than One Way Home to an appreciative audience that was even content to wait for Koko Taylor if they could hear more Keb' Mo'.
