The Bull Durham Blues Festival held its 10th Annual show for two nights at the old Durham Blues ball field. Attendance reached record levels during near perfect weather. Saturday night's crowd was not disappointed with great performances by Keb' Mo', Koko Taylor and Blues Machine, and Bo Diddley with the Debby Hastings Band.
Koko Taylor & her Blues Machine played a great set. Koko stalked the stage as the regal Queen of the Blues while the Blues Machine led by a great guitarist (Primo, possibly?) provided a very tight tasteful set of the blues for her.
Highlights of her set were I rather be blind and her answer to Muddy Water - I'm a Women. Surprisingly she also remade two classic rock songs into great blues numbers - Bad Case of Loving You and Come to Poppa. Neither song sounded false or a sell out as Koko and the band treated them as good songs not as throwaways to a non-blues crowd.
The Blues Machine was a treat in themselves. More than a backup band they played tight with good arrangements and sold playing throughout. The guitarist was particularly outstanding able to play both hard rock and tasteful licks on the more delicate numbers.
Koko ended with the classic Wang Dang Doodle that had the crowd dancing on the ballfield and ontop of the dugout. This was a great show from a classic performer with a great band.
