Little Hound Blues by The Bruce Brothers Band The Bruce Brothers Band led by guitarist Bruce Campbell has put out an album of classic blues bar band music. Starting with the striking original arrangement of Mojo Working with Dave Hunt's funky New Orleans style drum beat, silky harmonica playing by Dale Spalding, a nice piano solo by Tom Canning, and punctuated throughout with a four piece horn section. This is fun music - not music that relives the blues feeling but the kind that drives the blues away.
The band covers classic blues including Tore Down, Crossroads, Sweet Home Chicago as well as adding some original instrumentals. The sound is sparkling clear throughout the album as it moves the sound from big band to small combos for a nice mix. The band has various vocalists including harmonica player Dale Spalding, drummer Kenny Cetera, and bassist Jeffrey Takiguchi. A nice assortment of blues that fit well together.
Some Highlights include Lost in the Shuffle which has some nice smooth guitar soloing over an easy shuffle. Stormy Monday gets the big band treatment with David Moody playing a nice tenor solo over a strong horn arrangement. Unrequited Self Love is a moody jazzy instrumental blues with a very clear guitar work by Bruce Campbell and a horn arrangement that swings. Litte Hounds Blues is another instrumental but this is a small setting. Just slide and acoustic guitar over bass and drums with a trombone solo thrown in for good measure. Then there is the big and brassy A Lot of Love. Whos Been Talking is a smooth slinky blues weaving mellow guitars and a harmonica solo that would do Charlie Musselwhite proud. The low point of the album is a weak version Statesboro Blues - one of the few tracks that doesn't add anything to a classic. The album ends nicely with the smooth big horn sound of Last Call Blues.
A nice collection of blues with some great arrangements. Samples are available on-line at http://www.brucebrothers.com.
