Leo Kottke, played a benefit for the local Hospice at the Rialto Theater in Raleigh in November. Alone on stage with a pair of acoustic guitars at his side, he commanded the audience with songs played with stunning beauty and containing stories laced with laconic wit.
His version of "I Yell at Traffic" was one of those rare performances that just carries you away. The version on his Live album is merely impressive but in concert it was transcendent. The rest of his show at the Rialto also sounded great. Highly rhythmic but still moving his solo acoustic playing has set styles since the 70s. I remember one show in the seventies featuring two acoustic groups - both played the same Leo Kottke song, both versions sounded different, and both were highlights of each band's set.
His voice is a baritone that sings few words as though he was too self conscious to be thought a singer with his song selection containing "Jack gets up" and "The room at the top of the stairs." Strange stories make stranger songs but it works as a nice counter point to his instrumentals.
One nice thing about the show it was that it started at 7:30 PM which is helpful to the middle age fans who need to get up early the next morning for work or have baby sitters to deal with. The crowd seemed split between the middle age and the college age. I know that I didn't attend any concerts that my parents would have gone to but I wonder if other college age people did or if this set of generations is somehow unique in terms of music appreciation? Or, perhaps the late sixties was such a jump that people could not leap the gap but now it would become common?
Leo was very well received with multiple encores -- a very nice memory to have and hold onto.
