During the Deluge as Tropical Depression Dennis passed through Raleigh Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Bruce Hornsby, Shawn Colvin and David Lindley played a storm of music. A true mixture of players and sound almost but not quite as one band - RBHC&L?
Dennis decided to wait along the NC coast for a week changing from Hurricane to Tropical Storm before moving back to land and then moving inland towards Raleigh. Fortunately this not a repeat of Fran as Dennis weaken into a tropical depression but still it was a lot of wind and rain for an outdoor show.
But the show opened on time with David Lindley on lap guitar, Oud, and vocals and Wally Ingram on drums and percussion. They played an eclectic set of world and roots music that rocked along. Then quietly Jackson walked on stage with his acoustic to join Lindley on violin in a number while the roadies reworked the stage. Soon the rest of the band joined in. Eventually Shawn, Bonnie, and Bruce wandered onto the stage and joined in. For the rest of the night they alternated songs, sometimes adding harmonies, sometimes trading verses, and sometimes leaving the stage to take a break but always and obviously enjoying themselves. Shawn and Bonnie took to mimicking Celtic dancers during one of Bruce's super fast piano solos. Shawn often danced around in the background. Bruce played some fast piano solos and a lot of accordion while Lindley and Bonnie traded slide guitar riffs. Bonnie was the spokesperson and head cheerleader although she forgot the first verse to "A thing called Love".
They played lots of favorites including "Something to Talk About," "That's Just the Way it is," "The Barricades of Heaven," "World in Motion," "Dimming of the Day," "Nick of Time," and an appalachian version of "Valley Road" with Lindley on fiddle and everyone taking a verse.
Highlights were many - Bonnie sang a truly strong version of "I Can't Make You Love Me" with co-writer Hornsby on piano. Jackson Browne singing the Temptations "My Girl" was fun but the versions of "The Pretender" and "Running on Empty" were classic. And during the encores David Lindley led them all through a rousing version of "Mercury Blues".
What can I say - Rain? What rain?
