Scott Ainslie has a strong clear voice, a strong finger picking guitar technique, and a confident understanding of rural blues. He sings, plays, teaches, and writes about the blues that he loves. On stage he plays his national steel guitar and intermixes stories about old bluesmen with songs by Robert Johnson, Lowell Fulson, and others. He also played a number of tunes from his outstanding debut album Jealous of the Moon.
Musically Scott has a wide range from down home blues like Robert Johnson, old time folk songs like "I'm a Wayfaring Stranger", and neo pop folk songs like Joe Henry's "Date for Church" and Ainslie's own "Jealous of the Moon". His voice is strong and moves a mellow croon to a soaring surge that carries a song away. And he can low down and dirty when a hell hound is on his trail.
Ainslie is a blues historian relating stories of old bluesmen and quotes from the Alan Lomax when he searched for the players. Ainslie has done his searching of the back roads as well as writing an autobiography and guitar instruction video of Robert Johnson.
Jealous of the Moon is a favorite album of mine. Although it's mix of pop folk, blues, and a fine cover of Van Morrison's "Crazy Love" left it lost on the shelves I found it to be a nice mix. A crossover album without the slickness. Check him out if you can - he plays all too rarely.
