Tracy Nelson and the Nighthawksa played together at Artscenter. I was suprised that they were playing together but not surprised that it was a great show, The Nighthawks opened with a couple of Muddy Water tunes and were hot and tight throughout the night with nonstop blues harp and guitar. They brought Tracy on to sing some Bessie Smith numbers and then she solo'ed on the piano with her voice bringing the crowd to their feet. They encored with Elmore James "It hurts me too" and Jimmy Reeds's "Baby what you want me to do." The artscenter was packed but they still had them dancing in the aisles.

The Nighthawks have been around for a long time playing clubs across the country led by harpman Mark Wenner they are one of the premier blues bar bands around. They even survived Jim Thackery leaving in '87.

Tracy Nelson is best known for her 70's work with Mother Earth and later her country period. But I remember her first album where she sang and played acoustic blues backed by harp master Charlie Musselwhite. A truly classic but out of print album. It's great to see her back singing the blues.
